Multi-Apron Automatic Ferry RampDescription:BC Ferry Corporation's new S-Class Ferries on Route #1 between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay are substantially larger and have a higher loading capacity than the older fleet. In order to accommodate the new ferries at the terminal and to ensure fast and efficient loading and unloading of vehicles at all tidal conditions, a new ramp system with longer, wider ramps was required. VJA was retained by BC Ferry Corporation to develop a new ramp system and to carry out the detailed design and construction supervision. The ramp system now in operation consists of a double ramp facility with two-lane traffic at both the upper and lower ramp. Each ramp has three separately hinged aprons to ensure smooth transition from land to ferry deck. The ramps and the aprons are operated by an electronically controlled proportional hydraulic system with both manual and automatic operating capability.
