Description:

In connection with the development of a new mine on Misima Island, New Guinea, a service port and a soft waste disposal facility were required. Placer Dome Inc. retained VJA to prepare the planning and detailed design of the port and ocean disposal structures. The site is located in Maika Bay on the south side of Misima Island. The main features of the facility are:

• A sheet pile wharf with one deep sea berth, along with a ramp berth comprising of a steel pile berthing dolphin and a fixed barge ramp.
• A pile-supported reinforced concrete platform for truck dumping.
• Two protecting breakwaters and general shore protection in the form of rock armoured revetment.

The breakwaters are located at the edge of a steep coral reef and consist of rock filled steel pile cribs.
